Scott W. Smiley

Scott W. Smiley grew up in Miami, Florida. After graduating from Vanderbilt University with an undergraduate degree in philosophy, he entered the Florida State University College of Law.  As a law student, Scott was active in the Student Bar Association and worked as a research assistant to the school’s Former Dean, Orin Slagle, where he gained valuable experience in both legal research and writing. 

Upon graduation from FSU, Scott began his career with the Law Offices Of William H. Webster.  While associated with the firm, he gained extensive trial experience arguing personal injury actions, conflict public defender cases, and he took over the firm’s governmental, family law and probate caseload. Clients included the Lanark Village Water and Sewer District and the Panacea Area Water System.  Scott was made partner of the firm in 1992 and he continued to gain extensive courtroom experience through the formation of Thompson, Crawford, Brown & Smiley.

Mr. Smiley’s practice concentrates on complex Family Law matters and he assists the firm’s trial attorneys on both personal injury and insurance defense cases. He is a certified family law mediator. He has extensive trial experience in the areas of Insurance Defense, Family Law, (including complex child custody, child support, and alimony cases), Administrative and Governmental Law and he has served as general counsel for the Lanark Village Water and Sewer District, located in Franklin County, Florida.

In 2007 Mr. Smiley was invited to join the distinguished panel of members that comprise the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC).  Membership in this prestigious organization is by invitation-only and is peer-reviewed.  Its membership is comprised of the world’s leading corporate and insurance attorneys.  Members of the IADC are part of a select group with advanced skills and practice insurance defense law.

Mr. Smiley is a member of the Florida Bar, The Tallahassee Bar Association where he is active in the Bar’s Family Law Section, and the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC).  He has served his community well, having been recognized several times for providing outstanding contributions in the delivery of pro bono legal services.  Scott is active in the Tallahassee community and civic activities include membership in the Springtime Tallahassee organization and Springtime’s Spanish Krewe, where he has served on the organization’s Board of Directors, and has further served as Krewe Chief, Treasurer, and Float Chair for the Spanish Krewe.
 
A resident of Tallahassee, Scott has been married to his wife Maryanne for over twenty years, and they have one child.
